As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II.
Each coin’s obverse is double-dated (“1952-2022”) to commemorate the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

Acceding to the British throne on 8 September 2022 following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, His Majesty King Charles III now becomes part of numismatic history as The Royal Mint prepare to unveil the first definitive coins of the monarch’s reign, complete with eight new reverse designs.

The first definitive coins of His Majesty The King’s reign mark a milestone year in UK history. On 6 May 2023, the coronation of King Charles III took place at Westminster Abbey, a national event of celebration that came in the same year as His Majesty’s upcoming 75th birthday. These definitive UK coins feature the official coinage portrait of The King and embody the transition to a new reign and new Carolean era.

As the new definitive coins of the United Kingdom, the reverse designs take inspiration from the UK’s four nations and reflect some of His Majesty’s passions; they have also received The King’s personal approval. Soon, these contemporary designs will be familiar to millions of people in the UK and around the world.

The 2023 Annual Sets contain specially selected commemorative coins that celebrate icons, events and anniversaries of British cultural and historic significance. Serving as a physical representation of The Royal Mint’s dedication to its craft, innovation and quality, these sets are a highly anticipated release that marks another chapter in numismatic history each year. This year’s Annual Sets notably feature Martin Jennings’ definitive effigy of His Majesty The King for the first time.

Obverse: The centre depicts the Three Towers of Mount Titano, on the tops of which are placed the three Feathers, symbols of the Republic of San Marino; blades of grass at the bottom. On the left is the inscription 'REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO', on the right the letters CP, initials of Chiara Principe, author of the design, and the inscription U. PERNAZZA INC., initials of Uliana Pernazza, who did the engraving. Reverse: The centre depicts the Italian Geotriton (Speleomantes italicus). Around the top is the inscription 'PROTEZIONE DELLA FAUNA SELVATICA'

The 2€ coin shows the poet France Prešeren and the inscription "Shivé naj vsi naródi" (God’s blessing on all nations) − a line taken from his poem "Zdravljica" which is also used in the country’s national anthem. Edge lettering of the €2 coin: SLOVENIJA followed by an engraved dot.
