Feature: The 50th anniversary of the 25th of April 1974

Description: The 25th of April 1974 is the date of the revolution that marked the establishment of the democratic rule in Portugal and the beginning of a journey of profound economic, social and cultural transformations that led to the Europeanization of the country. At the centre of the design, a carnation symbolizes the revolution, surrounded by multiple eccentric circles that suggest that people’s actions and beliefs may change over the years, but remain essentially true to the principles of the revolution. On the edge, on the right, the verse ‘Esta é a madrugada que eu esperava’ [This is the dawn I have been waiting for], and the name of its author, poet ‘Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen’; and on the left by the national coat of arms, the captions ‘Portugal’ and ‘25 April 1974_2024’, followed by the name of the designer and the mintmark ‘Casa da Moeda’, the name of the Portuguese Mint. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.

Feature: Fight against cancer in Belgium

Description: The design shows in the centre a ribbon, which is used as a universal symbol to express engagement in the fight against cancer. The shape of the ribbon extends further along the two sides in curved lines, symbolising the movement of a heartbeat on a monitor, as an expression of life and vitality. Three lines can be seen at the top, as a reference to a rainbow (symbolising hope and consolation). Inserted in the bottom line is the country code BE and the year 2024. In the lower part of the piece are inscriptions in French and Dutch: 'Lutte contre le cancer' - 'Strijd tegen kanker'. The initials of the designer Iris Bruijns are located on the left side above the inscriptions. As the Royal Dutch Mint will strike the coins, the mintmark of Utrecht, a mercury staff is located at the very bottom of the piece, together with the Belgian mint director mintmark, an aster flower in front of an Erlenmeyer flask. The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.

The sky is slowly clearing

In recent years, science has made spectacular advances in the fight against cancer, increasing survival rates and extending lifespans. Although a diagnosis can be particularly harsh and the road to a cure can be quite tough, we should certainly not lose heart. More than ever, we must dare to take a positive approach to confronting cancer. Here, not only the specific input of the oncologist, but also the support of the psychologist and physiotherapist plays an invaluable role. Without forgetting the precious help of the caregiver or volunteer, of course.

This year marks the 750th anniversary of the death of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Roccasecca 1225 ca - Fossanova 1274). The Vatican Mint dedicates the 2 euro bimetallic coin to the anniversary in the double version Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof and the 25 euro colour silver rectangular coin. On the reverse side of the 2 euro coin, artist Arianna Ciccone shows Saint Thomas Aquinas in the foreground wearing the habit of the Dominican Order to which he belonged. His left hand holds a tome of his most important work the “Summa Theologica” and the other hand a feather quill. On the Saint’s chest a shining sun stands out, a symbol of his great wisdom. Among the various titles he received, the one he is most widely known for is that of ‘Angelic Doctor,’ which we see quoted below and which celebrates his exceptional purity of soul and body. In the background on the left side are a lily, a symbol of chastity, and the Church of Saint Thomas in Roccasecca, the first religious building in the world made to honour Saint Thomas Aquinas, proclaimed a Saint on 18 July 1323 by Pope John XXII.

The theme of the commemorative coin aims to highlight the history and unique qualities of Finnish architecture. The commemorative coin is also being released in recognition of architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen, and their mutually founded architectural office, Gesellius, Lindgren, Saarinen. Over the course of their careers, the architects designed several buildings, representing some of the most highly valued examples of Finnish construction history. The years 2023 and 2024 honour the sesquicentennial anniversary (150th year) of the births of Saarinen, Gesellius and Lindgren.
