In 2016, Monnaie de Paris launched a new series that paid tribute to the History of France through famous women who had an influence in several fields, such as politics, Art or Science...
In 2022, this series widens internationally and highlights women of the world. This series uses the principle of free striking which gives an antique look to the coins and makes each coin perfectly imperfect and therefore unique. After Sister Emmanuel in 2020 and Simone Veil in 2021, we pay tribute to Grace Kelly on the 40th anniversary of her death.

Drawing it’s inspiration from the presence of Angels on Napoleon’s Death medal and his tomb at Les Invalids,
Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica in 1769. He is widely regarded as one of history’s great military minds, building an Empire that stretched across Europe before his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was exiled to St Helena, where he remained until his death in 1821.
While Napoleon’s military cunning is undisputable, it is also believed that he carried a symbol of good luck with him, his own personal guardian angel.
The French Angel Coin first appeared in the late 18th Century. Its designer became suspected of revolutionary tendencies and was sentenced to death but somehow escaped the guillotine. Allegedly he bribed his captors with an Angel Coin, and it became known as a lucky charm. 19th Century French Naval Captains would refuse to sail without one in their purse, and even Napoleon was not beyond belief in the lucky Angel Coin. According to folklore he carried one in his pocket throughout his reign, only to fatefully lose it the day before his final defeat at Waterloo.

Surrounded by a circle with traditional Chinese motifs, a rabbit appears in the center of the face. Only the front part of the animal is revealed as if it came out of a door while advancing in our direction. The ideogram of the rabbit appears on the right of its representation. The year 2023 as well as the inscription "Year of the Rabbit" appear at the top, in the outermost circle.
On the reverse, we find all the animals of the Chinese zodiac distributed on a screen surrounding a traditional temple door. A complete cycle of the Chinese zodiac begins in 2018 and lasts until 2029. Each of these twelve years therefore highlights an animal from this calendar. The face value is visible at the top left and the mention "RF" is located on the door.
